Stephen Anderson (BVM&S, MVPH, MRCVS) is a veterinary surgeon with a dual role at Moredun.
Following Veterinary Training in Edinburgh he farmed and worked as a practice vet in the UK for a few years. In 1996 he spent 6 months in East Africa doing voluntary work for on an HIV prevention programme, which gave him an insight into how business can link with more traditional humanitarian objectives to bring hope to powerless people.
He established and was managing director of a successful 6 - person Veterinary Public Health company for 8 years which helped him to develop wide-ranging people and project management skills, allowing his business to be successful.
In 2009 he began working for the UK government as a Veterinary Officer dealing with animal welfare and notifiable disease control, facilitating international trade to ensure that local businesses are sustainable. He progressed to management of the veterinary team in Newcastle.
In 2011 he completed his Masters in Veterinary Public Health (with distinction) which formalised his special interest in the links between primary production, animal disease and human health.
While working as a government veterinarian, Stephen was seconded to a national veterinary project co-ordination team with a focus on networking with government policy advisors, delivery partners and stakeholders to improve efficiency and accountability within government projects.
In 2013 he took up a consultancy role with the EU working on an Animal Health Development Programme in Afghanistan, with a remit to strengthen the development of public-private partnership working between government and private businesses in the disease control sector. This also involved representation of Afghanistan at World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE – Office International Epizootes) meetings in Vietnam and Paris.
In 2015 Stephen took up his current position as Head of Bioservices, ensuring that Moredun has the correct people skills, facilities and animals to carry out research. He also works as a Business Development Manager within the Moredun Enterprise Team, which involves representing Moredun within the veterinary profession, building relationships with potential customers and networking with colleagues.
All his working life, Stephen has continued a parallel career in farming, and since 2006 has managed his 400Ha livestock farm in the Scottish Borders.
