Job Role

Data-driven research on livestock diseases, particularly helminth parasites of sheep and cattle.

Biography

I did a PhD at the University of Edinburgh on associations between parasite infection and life-history variation in the wild Soay sheep population of St Kilda. I then did post-doctoral research at the Universities of Sheffield, Edinburgh and Stirling on topics including life-history evolution in humans and elephants, and more on host-parasite interactions in the Soay sheep. All of my research used large, longitudinal data sets and a variety of multivariate statistical techniques to address my research questions. In 2018 I moved to Moredun as a Research Fellow, with the goal of applying these statistical techniques to increasing our understanding of livestock disease and developing ways of mitigating the impact of parasites on animal health, welfare and productivity.

Current Research

My main interest is in why animals vary in their responses to parasite infection, and how we can exploit the drivers of that variation for sustainable parasite control.

Current research interests include:

– Resilience, tolerance and resistance to parasites, and the relationships between them
– Environmentally-sustainable livestock farming and its impact on host-parasite relationships
– Impacts of parasite control strategies on the environment
– Application of meta-analysis to synthesize research in livestock disease
