Job Role
I am responsible for conducting research into bacterial disease in livestock and wildlife.
My current research is in mastitis in sheep and disease transmission by migratory geese with an emphasis on host genetics.
Biography
After completed my BSc in Zoology at Aberdeen University I have worked at Moredun for over 30 years, previously researching various aspects of parasitic disease in small ruminants, before switching to molecular bacteriology research.
During that time I have completed two Masters degrees, MSC in Biomedical Science and MBA with a specialism in Life Sciences.
Current Research
1. Longitudinal study of mammary health in a genetically characterized sheep flock
This is a four-year study following a cohort of 247 ewes throughout their breeding life, examining how mastitis infections affect a flock of meat-producing sheep. We aim to identify and characterise the main pathogens responsible for infection and their impact not only on the ewe, but also on the lambs and on the future productivity of the ewe. We are also looking for any genetic predispositions which may affect an individual animals susceptibility to mammary infections.
2. Orkney Goose Project
My role in the Orkney Goose Project is to develop molecular methods to characterise mitochondrial and MHC diversity in greylag geese. This will feed into current research looking at disease transmission by migratory geese, which is thought to pose a risk to livestock.
