Biography
I am a veterinary epidemiologist with a particular interest in bacterial pathogens and One Health. I graduated as a veterinarian at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh in 2008. My clinical career began on a livestock disease project in Kenya after which, I worked in veterinary practice in the UK. In 2011, I moved to the University of Glasgow as a Wellcome Trust Veterinary Training Fellow where I completed a PhD on the epidemiology of leptospirosis in Tanzania (2016) and then worked on a variety of zoonotic and livestock disease projects, also in East Africa. Subsequently, I worked as an Academic Clinician in veterinary infectious diseases at the University of Glasgow (2019-2026) before joining the Moredun Research Institute as a Principal Research Scientist in molecular bacteriology in 2026.
Current Research
My main research interest in the epidemiology and control of bacterial pathogens of veterinary and public health importance. Current research interests include: – Developing syndromic surveillance in livestock as a tool for monitoring emerging disease threats – Transmission dynamics of bacterial pathogens in livestock and wildlife – Understanding the epidemiology and impact of bacterial zoonoses, including Coxiella burnetii and Leptospira, at the human: animal interface – Using One Health approaches to design interventions to reduce the burden of diseases in UK and East African livestock.
