Biography
After graduating with an HND in agriculture from Auchincruive I farmed in partnership at Ballycoose taking over as senior partner in 1987 with 350 suckler cows and 1950 hill and upland ewes includng 2 performance recorded flocks.
The current farming operation is 3000 Easycare ewes performance recorded with Sheep Ireland and Signet.
Cattle are grazing store bullocks, heifers and dairy replacmnets.
- 1993 Awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarhip, studied 11 weeks in New Zealand, on ‘Beef and Lamb in an unsupported market’.
- 1994 President of Ulster Grassland Society
- 1996 – 2002 Chaiman of Historic Monuments Council NI
- 2002 – 2004 elected Deputy President of Ulster Farmers Union, President 2004 -2006
- 2003 Awarded OBE for contrbution to the Environment and Agriculture
- 2007 Co-opted to Harper Adams Audit & Risk management committee
- 2014 Appointed to Harper Adams Universit Board, 2018-2020 Chariman ARMC
- from 2015 a member of BBC Rural Advisory Committee
- from 2016 member of NSA Policy and Technical committee
Member of the NI NSA committee, UFU Hill Farming and Environment committtes, and NI Direcotr of NFSCO (National Fallen Stock Company).
Been chairman of the Maternal Sheep Group which started as Scottish Blackface Sire Reference Group.
