Biography
Sir Muir Russell was appointed Chairman of the Moredun Research Institute in September 2020.
Sir Muir Russell graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1970, with first class honours in Natural Philosophy. He joined the Scottish Office and during his thirty-three years as a civil servant he was Secretary of the Scottish Development Agency on its establishment in 1975 and under took various roles as Principal Private Secretary to The Secretary of State for Scotland from 1981 to 1983; Seconded to the Cabinet Office in 1990; Permanent Under Secretary of State, 1998 to 1999, and Permanent Secretary to the Scottish Executive from 1999 until 2003.
In 2003 Sir Muir Russell became Principal of the University of Glasgow until his retirement in 2009. Past appointments include Chair of the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland; Vice-chair of the Board of Governors of the Glasgow School of Art; Chairman of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh; a Non-executive Director of the National House-Building Council and Chairman of its Scottish Committee; a Council Member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh; and a board member of Moredun Research Institute between 2009 and 2018
