Moredun colleagues and our Moredun Foundation Regional Advisors were deeply saddened by the death of Professor Simon Doherty. Simon was internationally recognized for his work promoting One Health approaches to disease control and sustainable agricultural practices. He made a huge impact and many contributions to veterinary medicine and was a very warm, generous and knowledgeable colleague.
Simon was from Northern Ireland and came to Scotland to study veterinary medicine at University of Glasgow. He served as President of the North of Ireland Veterinary Association from 2015-2016 and went on to become President of the British Veterinary Association from 2018-2019.
Latterly, he conducted research and taught students at Queens University Belfast within the Institute for Global Food Security in the School of Biological Sciences and was recently awarded an Honorary Professorship from the University in recognition of his work.
He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2020 and won World Veterinarian of the year at the recent Global Veterinary Awards in Cape Town. In addition, he received an award from the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe for Outstanding Contribution to the veterinary profession.
Simon recently became the first Moredun Foundation Regional Chair for Northern Ireland and played a pivotal role in establishing this new board and setting up collaborative links between Moredun and Northen Ireland.
He will be greatly missed by so many people and our thoughts are with Simon’s family and friends at this very sad time.
