About the role
As the Principal Investigator and Head of the ARG, you will lead the development of a pioneering research programme focused on the control of infectious diseases affecting the welfare and production of aquaculture species. This research will be aligned with Moredun’s strategic objectives and will contribute significantly to the industry’s needs. You will have the opportunity to shape the future of aquaculture research, working with stakeholders and partners across academia, industry, and a diverse range of funding bodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Leadership: Develop and lead a cutting-edge research programme focused on the control of infectious diseases impacting aquaculture species, in alignment with Moredun’s strategic objectives
- Project Delivery: Ensure the successful delivery of research objectives within Moredun’s strategic plan and externally funded research projects, including overseeing and delivering on project timelines, budgets, and milestones
- Team Management: Lead and manage support staff and students, providing guidance, mentorship, and leadership to ensure the achievement of research goals
- External Funding: Build and expand research networks to attract significant levels of external funding from a diverse range of funding bodies and industry partners
- Stakeholder Engagement: Foster strong relationships with key stakeholder groups, industry partners, and end-users to facilitate knowledge exchange and the transfer of innovative research outcomes into practical applications
- Research Group Development: Expand and develop the Aquaculture Research Group at Moredun, collaborating closely with Moredun Scientific Ltd to initiate and advance industry-focused research projects and explore new funding opportunities

The provisional start date is the 1st of July 2025, but this may be flexible, with interviews planned for the week commencing 21st of April 2025.
Experience required
- A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Aquaculture, veterinary science, infectious diseases, or related disciplines) with a strong background in aquaculture research and/or vaccinology
- Proven track record of successfully managing and leading research teams, with experience in aquaculture or animal health-related research
- A strong publication record, demonstrating clear impact for research outcomes
- A demonstrated ability to secure significant external funding from diverse sources, including government, charitable, and industry partners
- Experience in engaging with stakeholders, with a passion for translating research findings into practical applications for industry
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to mentor and inspire a team of researchers and students
