Biography

Simon is a veterinary surgeon with broad experience in farm animal and aquaculture practice, disease surveillance and diagnostics, research and academia, business development and innovation, trade and investment, and professional representation.

He qualified in 2000 from the University of Glasgow and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Animal Health & Welfare in the Queen’s University Belfast School of Biological Sciences affiliated to the Institute of Global Food Security.

He is a Visiting Lecturer at both Hartpury University and at the Harper Adams/Keele University School of Veterinary Medicine. Simon is a Past President of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) 2018/2019, is one of the BVA representatives to the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) and chaired the FVE FishMedPlus Coalition from 2017 to 2019.

Between 2015 and 2018 he was the Animal Health & Aquaculture Sector Specialist at the Department for International Trade and led several overseas trade missions. Simon was appointed a GlobalScot by the Office of the First Minister in Scotland in 2018 and was also appointed to the Standards Working Group of the UK Trade & Agriculture Commission from 2020 to 2021.

He was a founding director of the community interest company Vet Sustain and is Vice Chair, Trustee, Veterinary Advisor and Ambassador for the international sustainable development charity, Ripple Effect (previously Send a Cow).
